SUSTAINABILITY

We want to actively protect our favourite place to be: the outdoors.

OUR MISSION

Taking a proactive approach, acting with a sustainable and conscious mindset – this is a matter of course for us at camel active. As a brand for outdoor casual wear, we want to protect our favourite place to be: nature.

Our mission, “MAKE AN ACTIVE CHANGE”, serves as our compass on our journey to learning more, to continually improving and to being more sustainable every day. Our aim is to be kind to our natural resources, to protect the environment and to ensure fair working conditions. Recognised standards and certifications support us in communicating our sustainability activities in a credible and transparent way.

NATURE

Nature is particularly dear to our heart – after all, we love being outdoors. Our long-lasting, high-quality casual clothing is your perfect companion for all your outdoor activities – whether in the mountains, at the beach or in the city park. This is why we see it as our responsibility to minimise our ecological footprint, using eco-friendlier processes and innovative materials to protect nature. MAKE AN ACTIVE CHANGE.

NATURE

We design and manufacture long-lasting, high-quality products – using more and more sustainable materials and eco-friendlier processes on a continual basis. We clearly and transparently label our sustainable products based on three categories: Organic, Recycled and Conscious.

ORGANIC

Organic cotton

Natural fibres, particularly cotton, with their positive characteristics, are the most important materials for our products. We are continually increasing the amount of organic cotton we use – with the advantage that the seeds are not genetically modified and the plants are grown without the use of fertiliser or pesticides. This means we are contributing to the improvement of the soil quality and, at the same time, the health of our workers. You will find organic cotton today in many of our T-shirts, pullovers, polo shirts, denims, socks and scarves. And we are increasing the share of cotton certified to the recognised textile standards Organic Content Standard (OCS) and Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).

RECYCLED

Recycled materials

Whether for the outer material, for insulation or the lining, synthetic fibres give our outdoor products a high level of functionality, such as reliable protection against the cold, a low weight or high elasticity. More and more of our jackets and vests feature recycled alternatives made of polyester or polyamide – thus contributing to reducing waste as well as saving natural resources and energy.

CONSCIOUS

Like in the Organic and Recycled categories, our Conscious category showcases additional innovative manufacturing processes, materials and initiatives which are helping us to protect valuable resources and to act more sustainably in a conscious way.

Denim finishing

To achieve the authentic and stylish look of our jeans, we rely on innovative and resource-friendly laser and ozone technologies, as well as water-saving washing methods. Based on the Environmental Impact Measurement (EIM by Jeanologia) as the global standard, we continually analyse our water and energy consumption and our use of chemicals. The Conscious label is only used when the burden on the environment has been significantly reduced during the finishing process. A large part of the current collection has already earned the status “Low impact” or “Medium impact” jeans.

More sustainable leather

For our camel active products, we use high-quality and long-lasting leather. Which is why we mainly use leather for our shoes and belts from suppliers who are members of the Leather Working Group (LWG). This is a global organisation that reviews compliance with environmental regulations and more sustainable practices. With our membership in the LWG, we are supporting a more responsible approach to leather manufacturing.

At the same time, we are working on continually increasing the share of plant-based tanned leather, and in expanding our offering of vegan and eco-friendlier leather alternatives.

PEOPLE

For us, this also means working in a partnership-like way and building up long-term relationships. We have set ourselves the standard of being a fair employer and are committed worldwide to internationally applicable and fair working conditions amongst our suppliers.

The Bültel Group, as the camel active master licence holder for the European Economic Zone, the Near East and Africa, has been operating two of their own manufacturing sites for clothing in Vietnam and the Philippines. Currently, 1,200 workers are there manufacturing a significant share of the trousers, jeans and outdoor jackets in the camel active collection. Our manufacturing facility in Vietnam received the STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification with top marks at the start of 2022.

STeP by OEKO-TEX®

On top of that, the Bültel Group has been a member of the amfori Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) since 2012. This initiative monitors and improves the social conditions within the supply chain. What’s more, all external manufacturing sites have to comply with the 11 Fundamental Principles of the Code of Conduct from amfori BSCI. This Code of Conduct comprises international working standards in line with those included in the ILO Fundamental Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from the United Nations (UN) and the Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

We frequently require our external manufacturing partners to go through testing and provide valid certification of their compliance with social standards and working conditions. In doing so, we only accept proof on the basis of the BSCI Principles , SA8000 certification or SMETA certificates. At the various links along the value-added chain, the compliance with and improvement of social standards are also proactively supported via collaborations and partnerships with GOTS, GRS and BCI.

Beyond this, our technicians frequently visit the manufacturing sites around the world to personally monitor the working and safety standards on-site and to school suppliers. Thanks to this close collaboration, many years-long cooperations have developed. We take our economic responsibility towards our partners all around the globe seriously and work together with them to further improve our high social and environmental standards. – MAKE AN ACTIVE CHANGE

FURTHER INITIATIVES

Many additional initiatives and collaborations support our mission to minimise our impact on the environment, to reduce emissions and to handle our natural resources with respect.

Animal welfare
No fur, no feathers – this has been our policy for many years. We have replaced feathers and down with synthetic heat insulation materials. All camel active products are free of real fur, which is why we have become a member of the Fur Free Retailer initiative by the Four Paws animal welfare organisation.

Innovative materials
Water-resistant, breathable, windproof – select outdoor shoes feature a SympaTex® membrane. This functional membrane is fully recyclable as well as PTFE- and PFC-free, and is manufactured in a climate-neutral way.

For the padding of select outdoor jackets, we use the innovative materials Sorona® and Thermore® Ecodown. Sorona® fibres are made of nearly 40% plant-based raw materials, such as corn and cornstarch. Their ecological balance shows progress: 30% less energy is required for manufacturing, and 63% fewer greenhouse gases are emitted than for the manufacturing of nylon, for instance. The fibres of the Thermore® Ecodown padding are made solely from recycled PET bottles.

Reduction of carbon emissions
The Bültel Group obtains its energy for the headquarters, the showrooms and the own camel active stores from renewable energy sources. The electricity is won completely from water – in other words, the amount of electricity needed is gained through water-based power and then fed into the power grid.

Emissions-free delivery: packages comprising orders from the camel active e-store are shipped climate-neutral with DHL GoGreen.

Eco-friendlier paper and packaging material
Whether recycled FSC (Forest Management Certificate) paper, 100% FSC mixed paper, soy-based printing colours or recycled polyester – we also rely on sustainable materials for our product tags and labels.

When it comes to advertising materials and banners in stores, we also make sure that they are manufactured in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner and use renewable raw materials or recycled alternatives.

We reduce transport packaging to the minimum required for protecting our products, and we pay attention to using mono-materials to support easier recycling.

Product safety
The strict legal regulations regarding harmful agents and chemicals have to be complied with by our manufacturing partners and suppliers. On top of this, we have our own Restricted Substances List (RSL) stipulating detailed standards and requirements, which was developed together with experts from the GermanFashion Modeverband Deutschland e. V. organisation. The compliance with values and standards is frequently monitored by certified, independent testing labs.

Partners and certificates

We cooperate with world-leading, independent partners and testing organisations who support us in implementing sustainability measures and who test and certify us according to standardised regulations.

AMFORI

We have been a member of amfori – Trade with purpose since 2012. To continually support the improvement of working conditions in the global supply chain, we participate in amfori BSCI. The amfori BSCI Code of Conduct is based on internationally recognised standards, such as the ILO General Standards, the UN Principles or the OECD Guidelines, and define the requirements for working hours, wages and the elimination of forced labour, discrimination and child labour, amongst others. Audits are performed in the manufacturing facilities (primarily in risk countries) to monitor the compliance with the amfori BSCI Code of Conduct, by accredited and independent auditing companies.
